Different phenotypes of the three Hemichromis species from West Africa and Lower Guinea. a–b two phenotypes of Group 1 corresponding to H. fasciatus from Lagoon Fresco in the Republic of Ivory Coast and Segou in Mali, respectively. c–d two phenotypes of Group 2 corresponding to H. elongatus from the Ogôoué basin in Gabon and the Dja system in Eastern Cameroon, respectively. e–f: two phenotypes of Group 3 corresponding to H. camerounensis sp. nov. from Idénao and the Sanaga River (type locality) in Western Cameroon, respectively

Consensus tree based on Maximum Likelihood (ML). Topologies were identical with Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Bayesian Analysis (BA). Numbers at the nodes are respectively percentages of bootstrap values based on 2,000 replicates for ML, MP and posterior probabilities for BA. Numbers correspond to codes of sample locations written in blue (also see Fig. 1 and Appendix/Online resource 1). When more than one sequence was obtained per location, the number of sequences is indicated in brackets but only one sequence was used for the phylogenetic inferences. Results of the species delineation analyses, bPTP (Zhang et al., 2013) and ABGD (Puilandre et al., 2012) together with results of the morphological analysis are indicated. I: H. fasciatus; II: H. elongatus; III: H. camerounensis sp. nov. The symbol (*) represents Cameroon localities coded as follow: 9a (Lake Dang, Upper Chad basin in northern Cameroon), 17a (Mouanko, Lower Sanaga), 18 (Lake Municipal of Yaoundé, Nyong basin) and 19b (So’o River, Nyong basin)

Distribution of the five-spotted Hemichromis species from West Africa, Lower Guinea and the Dja River. H. fasciatus is represented by squares (as well as H. frempongi from Lake Bosumtwi, with questionable status based on mtDNA), H. camerounensis sp. nov. by circles and H. elongatus by triangles
